Retro Coat Hook
PROCESS
Can we create a modular coat hook?
The client is looking for a product that holds multiples items of clothing near the door but, when not in use, can be moved out of the way. They love the retro style and has a particular love for gumball machines.
Vintage Mid Century coat racks by Roger Feraud and the coat rack designed by Ray and Charles Eames show a similar style to these interests.

Original forms

forms on a swivel
A coat rack with rods that move on a swivel allow them to be pushed flush with the wall when not in use. The original forms are divided in half.
To understand the idea and mechanisms of the hanger better, I made a small model out of wooden dowels. This gave me better measurements for a SolidWorks model.

Drilling through the rods

Assembling the entire coat hanger
Construction included creating the wall mount, bending the rod to the correct shape cutting the rod to size, drilling all the required holes, assembling the part, welding the rods to the wall mount, and press fitting the wooden spheres.
To mass-produce this part, some manufacturing steps will need to change. However, through this project I gained numerous skills in metal and wood working.
